More about the Chow Chow:
The chow chow is a spitz type breed of ancient origins. Characteristic is it's blueish black tongue and unique pendulum swinging type rear movement (also called stilted gait). The chow has a thick double coat - a layer of coarse, straight guard hair and an undercoat of soft, shorter hair to insulate the body. As with all spitz type breeds, it has a tail that lies over it's back (some curly, others straight) and it has prick ears - slightly rounded at the tips instead of pointed. Viewed from the side the body appears square with proud bearing of the head.

  Chow Chow facial expression:
The frown, or quizzical oriental scrutinizing expression of the chow chow, is well known and contributes to creating an aloof air about this dog. The chow is often not at all unfriendly, but the expression makes it seem so. It is not achieved by loose skin but by the way the facial features and ears work together in an alert dog.
Chow Chow - coat colours and pigmentation:
Two coat varieties occur in the chow chow:
The smooth chow chow which has shorter hair on the entire body, and rough chow chows which have a distinct mane with longer hair on the tail, back of the thighs & front legs.... read more information on chow chow colors ...
