Chow Chow
- coat types - smooth & rough: Two coat varieties occur in the chow chow: The smooth chow chow has shorter hair on the entire body - roughly 2-6cm generally - varying in length in different parts of the body. This is normal & correct as it serves to protect the body. The rough chow chows have varying lengths of hair over the entire body - with a distinct mane with longer hair on the tail, back of the thighs (trousers) & back of the front legs. |

Chow - coat colours in chow dogs: The chow chow breed sports five colours: Black - which can have grey shading on the tail, thighs & mane. When the coat is sunburnt, a reddish tinge appears to the coat. It is considered unattractive by some who show their dogs. A natural occurence, many pet owners don't mind it, some even like it. Blue - a steel gray which can have grey shading on the tail, thighs and mane. As with black, the same reddish tinge appears with prolonged exposure to the sun. This tinging of the coat increases just before shedding of the coat. Cream - varying from a warm reddish cream to a near white with biscuit to fawn coloured ears. If uncertainty exists whether a chow chow is a light red or "hot" cream, look at the nose. Only the cream has a pinkish hue to the nose. Fawn - also called cinnamon, this is a sandy brown colour which varies from a light earthy brown to a dark colour resembling the spice, cinnamon. It can have lighter shading on the tail, thighs and mane. Red - a warm brown which varies from a light gold to a deep mahogany red. It can have lighter shading on the tail, thighs and mane. |
